Certified Energy Consulting provides guidance and diagnostic testing of PV systems for solar contractors participating California's New Solar Homes Partnership program (NSHP). Our experience is that the NSHP is "no big deal" when the solar installer communicates with a HERS Rater and CEPE early on in the process. Coordinating with the HVAC and general contractors is essential for smooth compliance and that’s what we do best. A solar installer has enough to worry about so we strive to make the process easy. With incentive levels starting at $2.50 per CEC AC watt, the NSHP program starts to look pretty good. Solar contractors should not be discouraged with the NSHP process. Instead, sell, sell, sell and leave the compliance to us.
A Common Mistake With the NSHP
Many Solar Contractors believe that they need a HERS rater after the PV system is installed. The reality is that a HERS Rater is required to physically verify many efficiency items in the new home. HERS raters typically spend little time verifying the actual PV system and the bulk of thier verification time is spent on items such as window efficiency, insulation values, tight ducting systems, and air conditioning efficiencies. Too many NSHP projects involve the HERS rater " after the fact" and sometimes the CEC requirements can become messy. So involving the HERS Rater early avoids a lot of potential headaches.
NSHP Homes Qualify for Additional Incentives
Both Southern California Edison and PG&E offer $500 to $2000 incentives for NSHP qualified homes. Multi-family homes qualify for up to $400 per unit as well as other incentives including HERS and Energy consultant incentives.
